Sunan Abu Dawood : 2319
Narrated Abdullah Ibn Umar رضی اللہ عنہما :
حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ الْأَسْوَدِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو يَعْنِي ابْنَ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْعَاصِ، عَنْ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: إِنَّا أُمَّةٌ أُمِّيَّةٌ، لَا نَكْتُبُ وَلَا نَحْسُبُ الشَّهْرُ هَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا . وَخَنَسَ سُلَيْمَانُ أُصْبُعَهُ فِي الثَّالِثَةِ يَعْنِي تِسْعًا وَعِشْرِينَ وَثَلَاثِينَ.
The Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم said: We ae an unlettered nation, we cannot write nor calculate. The month is thus, and thus, and thus.'" (one of the narrators) Sulaiman closed one of his fingers the third time, indicating that a month is twenty-nine days, and (sometimes) thirty.
